Tradition

Passion…Dedication…Teamwork are just a few characteristics the Oil Barons organization looks for in its players and coaching staff. For it is these attributes we feel are critical in building a successful framework in remaining competive in the AJHL from a team standpoint and also from an individual standpoint as well. We feel these attributes backed by an organizational commitment to provide top notch coaching will provide our players with the platform necessary to progress successfully to the next level.

With a solid financial plan, strong board direction, and top notch coaching staff, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons are one of the envied Junior 'A' hockey clubs in the province, if not the country.  The proof is in the stability and winning ways of the team and organization.

Every year hockey players and organizations begin the new season with optimism and excitement for what lies ahead.  Never has that been more true than in the 1999-2000 season.  That year, the Oil Barons hosted and won the Royal Bank Cup, the National Junior "A" Hockey Championship.   The Oil Barons chased down a dream, a National Championship.  Special thanks to Curtis Phillips for providing the exciting Royal Bank Cup 2000 video below.

The Oil Barons franchise is perhaps the most stable and respected franchise in the AJHL.  There is no better place to play Junior "A" hockey than in Fort McMurray.  Ask the Alumni. Chris Phillips- Ottawa Senators, Harry York- Ex-Vancouver Canuck, Dave McCullough- Harvard, Paul Cabana- Mich. Tech, Darren Tiemstra- Alaska Captain, Scott Basiuk- RPI, Scottie Upshall- Kamloops Blazers and Nashville Predators.

Oil Barons Alumni "Where are they now"

Players not from Fort McMurray may be tempted when looking at a map to consider other options.  Don't!  After a few short weeks you will know you made the right choice.   Fort McMurray, a city of over 65,000, is young and vibrant and full of excitement for the Oil Barons.  Many players who finished playing Junior Hockey here still come back to visit or have stayed to work and raise a family.   Why do players love to play in Fort McMurray?

  • Large Crowds, always near the top in the AJHL each year.  There are no louder fans than Oil Baron fans.  Even opposing teams have been known to admit this.
  • The Oil Barons won the AJHL in 1997, 2000 & 2006 and have gone to the AJHL final four an unprecedented seven times in the 1990's and five times in AJHL Championship Finals in the 2000's.
  • Joining a winning tradition.  Players learn quickly to be proud of wearing an Oil Baron Jersey.

He Shoots, He Scores!!
The Oil Barons are one of the few teams in the A.J.H.L. that have the luxury of having games broadcasted at least weekly over the radio.  Local radio station CJOK 93.3 broadcasts most Saturday night home games and all home & away playoff games.  In addition to the local radio broadcasts, we also broadcast all our regular season away games and all playoff games over the internet.  All you have to do is click on the "Broadcast" button at the top left of the page.

Over the years, the Oil Barons have enjoyed a strong partnership with ROCK 97.9 and its sister station CJOK 93.3.  As part of this relationship, CJOK also does a weekly sports show where Oil Baron players are regular visitors.

Over and above the radio & internet coverage provided to the fans in the City, Fort McMurray's local newspaper, 'The Fort McMurray Today', covers every home & away game through their sports department.

The Internet Website is being maintained on a voluntary basis and any input into the coverage provided is certainly welcome.  Contact the head office at 743-5509 and someone will be able to put you in touch with one of the site maintenance volunteers who will be more than happy to look into your requests.
